The Best Entry-Level Sergers (and Overlockers!) For Sewing Your Own Clothes

How to use a serger_How to sew coverstitch machine sewing class-23

If you're ready to take your sewing to the next level, a serger might be your new best friend. Sergers (also called overlock machines) help you create durable seams, tidy edges, and give your me-mades that *chef’s kiss* professional finish — from the comfort of home. Whether you're sewing knits, finishing seams that won’t fray, or just want your garments to look as good on the inside as they do on the outside, an entry-level serger is a worthwhile investment. Used in conjunction wth regular sewing machines to finish seams for woven garments, or used exclusively to sew knit garments, you'll never regret adding it to your roster.

There are many options out there, but we’ve done the digging for you. After reviewing the best serger options, we’ve handpicked these beginner-friendly sergers that strike the perfect balance of affordability, ease of use, reliability, and value. Through this process, we uncovered some unexpected finds from high-end brands that are surprisingly budget-friendly, all while making it easier to find the perfect machine for your sewing needs.

Brother Sergers

Brother has built a reputation for affordable, approachable machines that are beginner-friendly but still deliver great results.

Our Top Pick: Brother 1034DX Serger or Brother ST4031HD

Brother is often recommended as a good brand for your first serger — and for good reason. They are user-friendly, intuitive, and come at a price that’s hard to beat. For many sewists, the 1034D is their first serger due to its reliability and lower cost. It certainly was for me! My at-home Brother is still going strong after nearly 15 years. While the features are basic, it's easy to thread and common enough that any repair person can service it without issue. With that said, we would recommend upgrading to either the 1034DX or the ST4031HD if you have a bit of extra cash. The 1034DX has controls on the right side, making it easier for right-handed users, is a bit easier to thread, and comes with extra feet. The ST4031HD is a bit more deluxe and is designed for heavy-duty sewing, and comes with a table extension, thread catcher and additional serger feet.

Why we love them:

  • 3/4 thread stitching with differential feed
  • Colour-coded, lay-in threading makes setup a breeze
  • Includes multiple presser feet for added versatility
  • Great support materials, including videos and tutorials

🟢 Compared to the newer 1034DX, the original 1034D offers nearly the same features for a bit less. The DX has LED lighting and a slightly updated body, but both are fantastic starters.

JUKI Sergers

JUKI machines are known for their power and precision, borrowing from their industrial heritage.

Top Pick: JUKI MO-644D Serger

A favourite among beginners who want a fast, professional-grade machine that’s still easy to use, the MO-644D blends industrial speed with home-sewing accessibility. This is another machine I've used extensively and can heartily recommend!

Why we love it:

  • 2/3/4 thread stitching for versatility
  • Speeds up to 1500 stitches per minute
  • Built-in rolled hem capability
  • Compact but solidly constructed for smooth sewing

🟢 Compared to the MO-654DE, the 644D is slightly more streamlined — fewer features, but also a simpler learning curve. It’s a great “step-up” serger without going full industrial.

PFAFF Sergers

With roots in German engineering, PFAFF machines are all about clean lines, smart features, and reliable performance. Here’s their current lineup of overlock and coverlock machines. We exclusively use Pfaff machines here in the studio and LOVE them. They have a range of sergers at a variety or prices and if you have a bit more to invest would be our top choice.

Top Pick: PFAFF Hobbylock 2.5

This beginner-friendly machine balances smart design with reliable power — ideal for garment sewists who want their seams to look as sharp as their exteriors.

Why we love it:

  • 15 stitch programs with 2, 3, and 4-thread options
  • Automatic tension settings — no guesswork
  • Large fabric space for bigger projects
  • Fast, quiet operation with clean finishing

🟢 Compared to PFAFF’s more advanced sergers (which can use air threading and add coverstitch and digital controls), the Hobbylock 2.5 keeps things simple but smart — just right for a first serger that feels high-end. Here in the studio, we use the Admire Air 5000 for our day-to-day serging needs, and the Admire Air 7000, which is a combo serger and coverlock machine. The 7000 also does a safety stitch, which we're obsessed with - it sews a straight stitch AND serged stitch at the same time (which means you don't need to sew first at a sewing machine), mimicking industrial sewing machines' finishes.

Singer Sergers

SINGER has been a household name in sewing forever and has a range of sergers at an accessible price point.

Top Pick: Singer X5004-HD Heavy Duty Serger

If you’re looking for a beginner serger with serious strength, the X5004-HD is a super popular and well-reviewed machine in Singer's lineup. Built for durability and speed, it’s a great option if you're planning to work with heavier fabrics or want a machine that can grow with your skills. I've used these a few times while teaching sewing classes, and they get the job done!

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re diving into knits, perfecting seam finishes, or just want that satisfying swish of a cleanly serged edge, any of these machines will serve you well as a beginner. Don’t let threading intimidate you — once you’ve got the basics down, a serger will feel like second nature. Take your time, read your manual (seriously!), and enjoy the process of learning something new.
