You may have noticed I have a thing for chunky knits these days. I find them extremely satisfying to knit (especially because it only takes a few days as opposed to say, a few years) and I love the texture. Something about those big, exaggerated stitches is very visually satisfying.
Like my last chunky knitting project, this sweater is a pattern from the latest collection by Good Night Day. From what I can gather, most of the sweater patterns in the ebook are more or less the same from a construction point of view (knit top-down, raglan sleeves), except with different necklines, hems and sleeve cuffs. I like this approach since you get a real handle on how everything fits and knits up when you started working on multiple variations. This coral beauty is technically the Strathcona pattern, but I made a few small modifications.
This was knit up using Cascade Magnum yarn. I was worried it was going to be scratchy (at least scratchier than the super soft Malabrigo yarn I used for my last sweater) but it is surprisingly wearable, even around that funnel neck. No need for a second layer! I love this pumpkiny colour and it happened to be on sale so I think this version was less than half the cost of the first. It still blows my mind how expensive knitting can be, although I think this sweater clocked in at under $80 which feels like a major victory.
Because I worried my other previous sweater was a bit small, I cast on more for this version, an extra two stitches at the neck, and then two extra stitches for each section once I moved onto the body. I tried it on repeatedly to make sure I liked how it was going, and I'm so happy with the final fit. Perfectly slouchy.
The other change I made was to the sleeve. Rather than just ribbing the cuffs, I reduced every 4th stitch so it would feel a bit more gathered and I'm really happy with the overall shape. I am all about a puffy, gathered sleeve these days.
It's been lovely having this beauty in my sweater arsenal. Dealing with our crazy climate, winter can really suck the joy out of getting dressed but having a huge, cozy sweater to nestle into is a consolation. Thankfully my Pendleton coat is roomy enough to accommodate this bulk.
