Our Crewmate of the Month: Meet Monica!

Say hello to Monica, our first Crewmate of 2024! We love Monica’s thoughtful makes, lovely photos, and the details she provides on how she adapts patterns. Looking at Monica’s garments, it’s clear that she puts a lot of consideration into her sewing projects and fabric choices. In the Crew Community, she shares ready-to-wear looks she’s inspired by, helps others with questions they have, and shares her recent projects. Read more to learn about Monica and see her beautiful garments for yourself.

Where in the world do you live?

Originally from Ontario, I now live in beautiful Vancouver, BC.

How long have you been sewing?

About 14 years. It wasn’t until after my kids in 2018 that I really started to get into sewing.

How often do you spend time do you spend on your sewing practice a week (including planning, researching, sewing etc).

I can spend a lot of time researching as I like to have as much information as possible before I make a garment. I will often go through a flurry of sewing activity followed by a period of not sewing anything. I’d like to try and be more consistent without burning myself out.

Did you have a gateway person or experience that brought you to sewing? My co-worker asked me to take an intro to sewing class where I learned how to sew a pillowcase. It was so cool to make something useable from scratch!

What is your favourite thing you’ve made? My Saguaro set by Friday Pattern Co. always makes me feel like a million bucks whenever I put it on. I love how it’s casual but still sophisticated.

What is your favourite Closet Core Pattern? It’s tough to choose! I’ve sewn 12 Closet Core patterns and 3 from Crew. I would say Pietra is my favourite as I’ve made all 3 views. From Crew, it’s Sepia. I’m really loving the barrel leg shape lately!

What was the best lesson or skill that took your sewing to the next level? Making jeans! I was so intimidated by the process that I took a class and learned it actually wasn’t difficult at all – just a series of small doable steps.

What pattern release would you not be able to resist (aka what type of garment would automatically jump your queue). My heart is in the 90's so I would love a good cargo pant.

What are your sewing goals? What would you like to learn how to do to push your practice forward? I’m currently in a levelling-up mode where I’m challenging myself to sew more technical garments. I would love to really nail fitting down. Make a beautifully tailored coat and maybe one day even make a ski jacket!

What’s the next thing you want to make? The Sandstone is on my list – it has all new-to-me skills like making a garment out of technical fabric, snaps and installing a zipper on a jacket. Perfect for PNW weather.

How was sewing impacted or interacted with your identity? After having kids, my post-partum body didn’t fit the standards anymore and it felt disheartening. Well-fitting pants are hard to find and so sewing has been amazing as I can make clothes that fit my body.

Thank you Monica!
