Meet the Sage Skirt, our March Pattern for Crew!

Sage Skirt Pattern // Closet Core Crew

So far this year with Crew (our monthly pattern + sewing membership) we've released a quilted jacket and cozy drapey sweater. This month, we're excited to introduce you to the Sage Skirt, our first bottom in this year's capsule wardrobe, and a truly versatile piece we think you'll want to make over and over again. Join Crew starting at $10 USD a month to get it!

Sage strikes the perfect balance between simple and stylish. We're big fans of separates around here, and having that perfect skirt in your wardrobe that goes with everything makes it so much easier to get dressed, especially when you want something a bit more polished and dressed up than pants.

The Design

Sage Skirt is designed to highlight drapey fabrics. Midi-length with a slightly A-line silhouette, it skims and floats around the body and can easily be dressed up or down. We've been seeing lots of styles like this in ready-to-wear, and we love how great it looks paired with t-shirts, sweaters, blouses, and blazers.

Sage hits below mid-calf and features a three-panel front, darts in the back for shaping, a gently curved waistband designed to sit at the natural waist, and an invisible zipper closure at center back. View B adds a front slit ending at mid-thigh for a flash of skin, in addition to a hidden “credit card” pocket inserted at the waist.

For me, it's all about that slit! It looks so great when you're standing and walking, and quite, ahem, sexy, when you're sitting down. I feel like we haven't done a va-va-voom detail in a while, and I love how the longer length of the skirt is balanced by that peek of thigh. We've included two different slit heights for more vs. less leg, but you're also welcome to skip it entirely if you'd like something a bit more modest and/or practical.

While Sage comes in a midi length, you of course can adjust it to any length, from above or below the knee, to a mini or even maxi length. It's just an all-around workhorse of a pattern, and given how fast it comes together, I suspect you'll want to make more than one to pair with all the tops in your wardrobe.

Sage is available as a PDF pattern in both our 0-20 and 14-32 size ranges - you get both with your monthly download!

Suggested Fabrics

This skirt is designed to highlight drapey and flowy fabrics. While it certainly can be made from wovens with more structure (ie. linen or cotton) we highly suggest it for fabrics with a lot of movement; think rayon challis, viscose, crepe de chine, and satin. It's also an amazing opportunity to have fun with patterns. We've got so many great viscose prints at Core Fabrics and I selfishly wanted a pattern I could use with some of my favourites, so I'll definitely be making a few this spring!

If you're eyeing any of the samples we made, just like each month with Crew, Core Fabrics has created fabric kits to recreate them yourself! We've also curated a collection of additional fabrics and supplies that work with this pattern to make it easy to find what you'll need.

How to Get Sage

Like all Crew patterns, Sage is only available when you sign up to Crew! Subscribe at the monthly level with Essential or Plus to get it (you can cancel at any time), or sign up for our annual Unlimited plan and get Sage, Marigold, the Parchment Quilted Jacket, and 11 more patterns in the coming year!

(Please note that if you are signing up after March 2023, you'll only be able to access Sage at the Unlimited level).

This Month in Crew

With a Crew membership, you get access to so much more than just a pattern. Each month, we curate a theme page with an inspiration board and curated resources to help you assemble your pattern. You also get access to our private forum, whether you're looking for fitting or sewing help, or just want to chat about sewing with like-minded folks.

Our Plus and Unlimited members also get access to an in-depth video sewing lesson with me. This month I'm teaching you an interesting methodology for fitting a darted skirt that - spoiler alert - does not actually involve sewing the darts until the very end. Sage is a great pattern if you're new to fitting so I'm excited to help you get a skirt that fits you perfectly!

You'll also be able to join (or watch at a later time) our monthly live event. This month we're doing an in-depth deep dive into how to pick and assess fabrics for your sewing projects, so you'll have a better handle on what you're looking for when you're planning your makes. I love fabric (obviously) and am excited to speak about it a bit more intimately.

We're so excited to see what you do with #ClosetCoreSage! Join today to get sewing!

P.S. A big thank you to Poppy Barley for many of the shoes we used in this shoot.
