Meet the Azure Dress, our June Pattern for Crew!

Crew Pattern Icons (1)

We are celebrating SUMMER with our beautiful new Azure Dress, our June pattern for Crew (our monthly pattern + sewing membership). Azure is a romantic ode to gathers and tiers - like a beautiful layered cake you can't wait to eat! Join Crew starting at $10 USD a month to get it!

The Design

Our patternmaker Celine has had the design for Azure on her hitlist for almost 3 years! She drafted a version of it for herself and we knew this would be a must for our first year of Crew. Gathered tier dresses are not new territory for us (hi Nicks!) but we love this unique spin on the concept. Asymmetrical panels with strong diagonal lines create a modern and bold silhouette - it feels incredibly fresh and fun for the heat of summer.

Anchoring Azure is a classic semi-fitted sleeveless bodice with a jewel neckline and bust darts for shaping, while the angled waist seam mirrors the alternating tier seams. In the back, a delicate slit opening with a button closure is a pretty and delicate detail (and a good way to use up those random "one-off" buttons we all have laying around!) The bodice can be fully lined (ideal for non-opaque fabrics), or you can use an all-in-one facing, and we have a nifty burrito method for finishing this cleanly and with little fuss.

Azure has two main views. View A has two skirt panels and ends above the knee while View B has three skirt panels with a maxi length. One of the reasons we love this design is the many different ways you can customize it with fabric and colour choices. Use it to scrap bust smaller quantities of fabrics (imagine a gradient or colour-blocked version) or to mix prints or textures (wouldn't it be incredible with a mix of dainty Liberty florals?!) We're also hoping you'll be creative with tier hacking - this pattern would work beautifully as a peplum top or single-tiered gathered dress as well!

Azure is available as a PDF pattern in both our 0-20 and 14-32 size ranges - you get both with your monthly download!

Suggested Fabrics

Azure works in a variety of wovens. For more structure, choose light to midweight fabrics such as linen, cotton poplin, voile, batiste, chambray, double gauze, batiste and shirtings. For a drapier dress, choose light to midweight drapey fabrics like rayon challis, viscose, Tencel twill, and silk crêpe de chine.

This style of pattern can be a fabric-eating monster, so the entire thing is cut on the cross grain instead of the lengthwise grain to conserve fabric - please be aware of this if you're using a directional stripe or print for this design, as you may need to purchase additional yardage if you need to rotate the pattern pieces.

If you're eyeing any of the samples we made, just like each month with Crew, Core Fabrics has created fabric kits to recreate them yourself! We've also curated a collection of additional fabrics and supplies that work with this pattern to make it easy to find what you'll need.

How to Get Azure

Like all Crew patterns, Azure is only available when you sign up for Crew! This Month in Crew

With a Crew membership, you get access to so much more than just a pattern. Each month, we curate a theme page with an inspiration board and curated resources to help you assemble your pattern. You also get access to our private forum, whether you're looking for fitting or sewing help, or just want to chat about sewing with like-minded folks.

Our Plus and Unlimited members also get access to an in-depth video sewing lesson with me. This month I'm teaching a pattern hacking and fitting lesson. I'll show you how to adjust the darts to best fit your bust and a few fun neckline modifications you can make to get even more mileage out of this pattern. You'll also be able to join (or watch at a later time) our monthly live event. This month Heather and Monserratt are having a conversation with Ruth
