Today marks our twelfth pattern for Crew and the end of our first year in our sewing pattern membership! We've learned so much and have really loved exploring a different design each month as part of a broader annual concept of "Colour". For December, we are delighted to tie a bow on this year with the Rose Blouse and Dress, a beautiful and romantic peasant style pattern that may be our quickest sew yet! Five Reasons to Get Excited About Rose
- Rose sews up EXTREMELY quickly. Because it only takes 4 pattern pieces and features raglan sleeves (so much faster to sew than set-in sleeves!) you can easily whip this up in a couple of hours (I timed myself and it took 2.5 hours to cut and sew!) This means you can have a new look in an afternoon, or whip out a gorgeous gift in no time at all.
- It features pretty gathered details WITHOUT any gathering. We've explored gathering this year with the tired Azure dress and Periwinkle shirtdress but Rose gets that lovely soft look without having to sew a single basting stitch. Instead, the neckline and wrists are shaped with a drawstring or elastic depending on the view you choose.
- It is ideal in drapey fabrics like rayon, viscose, and silk. I love sewing and wearing these fabrics but it's not always easy to find beautiful patterns that work well in them. Rose shines in more fluid fabrics, especially View A with the gorgeous tie front neckline.
- It's a dress AND a blouse! We originally planned for Rose to be just a blouse, but we experimented with lowering the hem and loved how it worked as an above-knee length dress as well. Wear it loose for a comfy swingy dress, or belt it for more definition at the waist.
- Rose is light on notions and you probably have everything you need in your stash. While we call for 1/2" elastic for the wrists of both views and the neckline for View B, you could also skip the elastic entirely and gather the neckline and cuffs with the fabric drawstring for a soft, bohemian look.

Suggested Fabrics
This pattern can be made with a variety of wovens. For a soft and romantic effect, choose drapey fabrics like cupro, silk crepe de chine, rayon challis, and viscose. For a more breezy and structured effect, choose lightweight cottons such as voile, batiste, and double gauze.
