Inspiration for Your Moonlight Collars

When we were first planning the Moonlight Dress, we never planned on adding collars. However, Justine joined our team as our new pattern production manager, and as a passionate vintage sewist, she wanted to experiment with adding some sweet vintage touches to the pattern. We loved the collar she came up with so much we decided we had to add it as an option for you as well!

For her version, she embroidered a wee bee on her collar using this video tutorial from Pinterest. We love how simple yet eye-catching this little detail can be; it took a simple cotton dress all the way to fashion town. With that said, there are a million ways you can customize these collars for your own Moonlight, and we thought we would round up some easy ideas for you to get inspired. Choose from the pointed or rounded version of the collars provided and then get creative!

Embroidery

To add some interest to your collar you could try your hand at embroidery. Hand stitch a little motif or go full on and add a pair of swans to your neck, you're the designer! We recommend adding this step before you sew the two collars together, that way you'll have a clean finish on the back side and ensure you are happy with your design before adding to your dress.

Embellishment

Take a stab at beading or sew on an already beaded appliqué for a show-stopping collar. Keep the dress simple (imagine black velvet) and add interest with pearls, seed beads or rhinestones! Love the idea of using faux flowers like these retro daisies. You could also dip the back collar points in beads to make a statement with the back view...

Crochet + Lace

If you are a crafty yarn person there are lots of detachable collar patterns on the market to hook one yourself. If you have some pretty lace languishing in your stash this would be a good time to bust it out and add a little razzle-dazzle to your next holiday look!

Quilty Pleasures

We are seeing quilted collars everywhere. From handmade to the runway, this crafty trend can pack a punch. To keep the look from veering into toddler territory, keep the colours restrained or pair with a super simple dress. To get extra mileage out of your Moonlight, make the collar detachable and tack on or add snaps.

Happy Moonlighting!
