Did you catch our big announcement? This year we launched a really exciting new project called Crew, our new monthly pattern and sewing membership! Each month we’ll be bringing you a completely original new PDF pattern in sizes 0-32, available exclusively to Crew members. Every year we plan to design a capsule wardrobe with a unique theme, and for our first year, our theme is COLOUR. We are starting off January – the first month of the year and the first month of Crew – with the purity of a fresh start and the beautiful possibility of a blank canvas… the colour of parchment.
The Parchment Quilted Jacket is our first pattern for Crew, and it’s the perfect pattern to introduce our new concept. A quilted jacket is truly one of the most fun and creative sewing projects you can make – there is SO much opportunity to create something totally unique and one-of-a-kind, from fabric choice and textile combinations to quilting patterns and motifs. With that in mind, the beauty of Parchment is how easy and fun it is to actually assemble, and the endless options to make it your own. We’ve made many, MANY versions of Parchment, from a quick afternoon sew using pretty double-sided jacquard, to fully patchworked works of quilting art. This is a true “choose your own adventure” pattern!
Parchment Quilted Jacket Details
Parchment is a canvas for all your wildest sewing, quilting, and fabric dreams! Our take on a quilted jacket features curved raglan seams and a slightly balloon-shaped sleeve. With a gently oversized fit, it is the perfect seasonal layering piece with lots of room for sweaters underneath. That said, you can always size down for a more fitted look. If you watch our “Intro to Parchment” video below, you’ll see how the fit totally changes when I try on Celine’s much smaller jacket (spoiler alert, it looks great!)
Parchment has two major views. View A ends at the hip, with angled patch pockets. For both views, you have the option of extending the center front into a button placket. If you choose to skip the placket, the jacket has a lovely soft curved shape at neckline and hem. This variation is ideal as a cozy layering piece, perfect for cool days, indoors and out.
View B is longer and ends just below the knee (we made Monsie’s blue sample before cropping the hem somewhat, so the plaid coat is a more accurate depiction of the true length of View B). This version has large patch pockets as well, and again you have the option of extending the center front into a placket. If you add the placket for snaps or buttons, the front neckline and hem are straight at the corners for a slightly sharper look. We love the versatility of this variation since it starts to feel like an actual coat, one you can do up to ward off the cold. It looks so different depending on your fabric choice and quilting application. In a heavy-weight cotton plaid jacquard with oversized buttons like the sample below, it starts to feel like a mod-ish 60s inspired coat – truly a case where the choice of fabric radically transforms the final look!
We love this pattern because it can be made in literally endless ways. Trust me, we’ve tried. Almost everyone on our team made a version of Parchment and each one turned out RADICALLY different depending on what particular fabrics and sewing applications they used.
In Crew this month we’re excited to explore quilting sewing techniques as our first monthly theme. We have blog + video tutorials on making and installing double-fold bias binding, lots of quilting and design inspo, and an in-depth fitting tutorial taught by Heather on how to fit raglan sleeves for our Plus + Unlimited members.
If you’ve never made a quilted jacket before, this is the place to start. If you have made one before, we think you will adore this very flexible pattern with a million ways to make it uniquely yours!
Fabric Pairings + Kits
Love the fabrics we used to make our samples? Every month, our sister brand Core Fabrics will be curating collections of kits, fabrics, and notions you can use to make your Crew pattern. This month the shop is stocked with all kinds of ready-to-go supplies like pre-quilted fabrics, super soft bamboo quilt batting, and matching cotton poplin and double-fold bias tape.
To make it even easier, Crew members will also have the option to shop for exclusive kits for Crew patterns using the same fabrics we used for our samples. This is not included with your subscription, merely an optional way to get everything you need for your project in one easy click. This month, we’ve put together 5 quilted jacket kits that include everything you need to make Parchment, from our plaid jacquard to a whimsical Grecian-inspired print.
Celine + Heather Talk Parchment:
Want to learn more about this pattern? In the video below, our patternmaker Celine and I talk all things Parchment!
Want to get your hands on Parchment? As a Crew pattern, it’s available exclusively to Crew members, which means it’s not available as a standalone PDF pattern in our shop. To access Parchment, in addition to all the other perks of Crew (including curated resources to help you sew each pattern, a private community, and exclusive sewing lessons and live events each month!) you’ll need to sign up for one of our monthly or annual plans. But remember: once February 1 arrives and we launch a new pattern, Parchment will only be available to download as part of our annual Unlimited plan, so if you are eyeing a monthly plan, you need to sign up in January in order to get Parchment.
With that said, we are celebrating our launch this month with a special promotion that expires January 31st. If you sign up for our annual Unlimited plan, you’ll not only save 20% for the year, but we’ll also throw in an extra month for free! That means you’ll get 13 months of patterns, content, and community from Crew, starting with Parchment.
We hope you’re excited to sew Parchment – it was a super fun pattern to develop and we’ve had so much fun making them ourselves. See you in Crew!
